Rick Berry

Head Coach- 2001 Squirt Super Series Team

Evolution Elite Hockey Academy is proud to announce the appointment of Rick Berry as a Coach.  Rick was born in Birtle, Manitoba. After going through the Birtle Minor Hockey Association, Berry joined the Seattle Thunderbirds of the Western Hockey League, helping his team win the Western Conference championship. In 1997-98, the defenseman split the season between Seattle and Spokane.  Berry was the third pick of the Colorado Avalanche, ( 55th overall)  in 1997's Entry Draft and spent the better part of the next three seasons in Hershey developing his skills with the AHL Bears. He served as the assistant captain in 1999-2001 and was named defensemen of the year in 2000 and 2001.  He was selected for the AHL All Star Team in 2001. He made his NHL debut January 7, 2001 in a game against the Detroit Red Wings. In parts of two seasons, Rick appeared in 66 games for the Colorado Avalanche. Then, on March 19, 2002, Rick Berry and Ville Nieminen were traded to Pittsburgh Penguins (NHL) in exchange for Darius Kasparaitis, and he finished the season with the Penguins.  Rick spent the majority of 2002-2004 seasons with the Washington Capitals (NHL) blue line.  Following his two-years with the Caps, Berry signed as a free agent with the Phoenix Coyotes in the 2004-2005 lock out season. He played for their AHL affiliate, the Utah Grizzlies and served as the Team Captain. The 2005-2006 season, he split between San Antonio (AHL) and Milwaukee Admirals (AHL) and served as the Assistant Captain on both teams.  In 2006-2007 Berry played for the NY Islanders AHL affiliate, the Bridgeport Soundtigers and served as the Assistant Captain.  Rick spent 2007-2008 with the Springfield Falcons (AHL) and was the Team Captain. In 2008-2009 Rick headed overseas and played for the Duisburg Fuchse in the DEL German league.  In 11 years of professional hockey, he has appeared in 197 NHL games to total 672 games at the professional level.

Rick's next step in his hockey career is to develop and teach players how to achieve the next level.  Rick has spent several years training and coaching kids individually and in hockey schools across North America. Rick is also the President of Advance My Athlete, an online mentoring and consulting community for youth athletes and parents. (www.advancemyathlete.com) Rick and his wife Tonya have resided in Denver since 2001. They have 3 daughters Natalie, Caroline and Molly. The Berry family has been and continues to be active in various charities throughout and the Denver Community.

Alexei Gusarov

“Since making his NHL debut in 1990-91, defenseman Alexei Gusarov has been a fine positional player with an ability to make useful passes on offense. A veteran of several years in the Soviet League, he adapted quickly to the rigors of the NHL season and accepted a variety of roles to keep himself in the lineup.

Born in Leningrad, Gusarov played with the local SKA club before joining the powerful Central Red Army of Moscow. He was a top player on the club for seven years and helped the USSR win the gold medal at the Calgary Olympics in 1988. The talented blueliner was selected 213th overall by the Quebec Nordiques in 1988 and looked solid in 36 games as a rookie in 1990-91.
The steady rearguard provided stability on the Nords' blueline and was part of the club's resurgence from the league's doormat to a first place finish in the Lockout-shortened regular season in 1995. The next year Gusarov remained with the franchise when it relocated to Colorado. During the 1996 post-season, he provided savvy and nine assists while helping the Avalanche win the Stanley Cup. He took a regular shift on the powerful club until the early stages of the 2000-01 season.
The veteran blueliner was traded to the New York Rangers in December 2000, but the team disappointed and was out of the playoff race by the March deadline. Gusarov was picked up by the St. Louis Blues as they prepared to make a statement in the Western Conference playoffs. He was a useful player in 16 games as the Blues reached the semifinals before bowing out to the eventual Stanley Cup champion Avalanche.
After competing in 607 games, Gusarov retired from the league following the 2000-01 season. He retired as one of the few members of the Triple Gold Club, having won the 1989 IIHF World Championship, the 1996 Stanley Cup, and the Olympic gold medal in 1988.”
